Mário Henrique Simonsen, engenheiro, economista, professor, brilhante intelectual, presidente do BC no governo Castelo Branco, ministro da Fazenda do governo Geisel e ministro do Planejamento do Governo João Figueiredo, decidiu pedir demissão. Estava insatisfeito e parecia saturado da vida pública. Fez a carta de demissão e foi entregá-la ao presidente que se exercitava no haras que mantinha na Granja do Torto. O ajudante de ordens pediu para o ministro aguardar um pouco. Três, quatro, cinco cigarros depois, aparece o general Figueiredo, saindo da ducha, dorso nu, toalha enrolada :
- Presidente, vim aqui trazer este documento.
Figueiredo, em pé, abre a carta e lê o pedido de demissão. Explode :
- Quer dizer que o senhor está dizendo que o meu governo é uma merda ?
Impávido, sem titubear, Simonsen responde :
- É isso mesmo !
E saiu calmamente fumando mais um cigarrinho.
